Nelson Havi Vows to Defend Mt Kenya Bhang Farmers in Court

  • Lawyer Nelson Havi has offered legal support to bhang growers found in Mt Kenya Forest.
  • Interior CS Murkomen said a major crackdown is ongoing, linking the farm to security officers and administrators.
  • Murkomen revealed over 10 acres of cannabis have already been discovered.
  • Havi argues that the crop should be treated like other cash crops and not criminalised.
  • Cannabis remains illegal in Kenya with tough penalties under current law.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sounded the alarm after cannabis plants were discovered on a large stretch of land inside Mt Kenya Forest. A joint team involving several agencies has since been sent to the area to destroy the crop and arrest those behind the illegal farming.

Over 10 Acres Already Identified

Murkomen stated that the cannabis was being cultivated on more than ten acres of forest land, and the illegal activity is believed to be backed by a powerful network. According to him, some police officers and local officials could be part of the syndicate helping farmers break the law.

Havi Sees Opportunity, Not Crime

Reacting to the news, lawyer Nelson Havi expressed a different opinion from the government’s. He said the farmers involved were simply innovative Kenyans looking for ways to earn a living, and that they deserve support rather than punishment.

Offers Free Legal Help to Accused Farmers

Havi, who once led the Law Society of Kenya, said he is ready to represent any of the farmers who may be arrested over the issue. He believes cannabis can be processed, improved, and sold just like other agricultural products if the laws are changed.

Calls Out ‘Outdated’ Drug Laws

In his remarks, Havi urged Kenyans to rethink laws that punish cannabis cultivation. “These farmers need help, not jail. Let them add value and grow their businesses. If anyone knows them, send them my way. I will defend them,” he said.

Bhang Still Illegal Despite Legalisation Push

Even though some voices continue pushing for the legalisation of bhang in Kenya, it remains banned. Under the law, anyone caught with cannabis could be sentenced to a minimum of ten years in prison.
