An operation to tackle drugs and illegal liquor in Dagoretti turned dramatic after officers stormed a well-known hotspot near a railway line in Mutuini. Dozens of young men who were using narcotics at the site ran off when they saw the team approach.
In their rush to escape, they left behind a sack nearly full of what is suspected to be cannabis. The scene turned tense shortly after, as angry youths returned and began throwing stones at the officers and their vehicle.
Early Strike on Alcohol Dens Yields No Arrests
Earlier in the afternoon, around 4 PM on May 20, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) officers—backed by 15 armed personnel—had begun their operation in Ndonyo Market. Their first stop was at four locations suspected of selling chang’aa.
However, the dens were already deserted. The officers found no alcohol, no suspects, and no other evidence. It was suspected that the operators may have received a tip-off before the raid began.
Strategic Withdrawal After Youths Get Aggressive
Despite the failed alcohol bust, the team pressed on. Their attention turned to the nearby drug zone, where a confrontation quickly unfolded. The group of young people, after scattering initially, regrouped and began pelting the officers with stones.
Though the situation became dangerous, the officers made a quick but calm retreat to avoid further conflict. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Authorities Vow to Continue with Surprise Raids
After the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police Nicholas Kosgei addressed the media, vowing not to relent.
“We won’t let our youth be destroyed by drugs and illegal brews. This is only the start. We will move in without warning,” he said firmly.
The seized drugs were booked at Jogoo Road Police Station while an official report was recorded at Riruta Police Station.
Residents Back the Crackdown
Locals in Mutuini have long raised the alarm over the rising cases of drug abuse and illegal alcohol affecting youth in the area. Many say such raids are overdue and hope the action will help clean up their neighborhood.
NACADA’s bold move has been welcomed as a serious effort to deal with what residents call a growing crisis.
