Murkomen Calls for Stronger Community Ties to Boost Security in Embu

  • CS Murkomen champions Nyumba Kumi and multi-agency teamwork for peace.
  • Warns against rising cases of illicit brews in Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi.
  • Urges stronger crackdown on cannabis farming in Mt. Kenya forest.
  • Blames miraa vehicles for frequent road accidents on Meru-Nairobi highway.
  • Emphasizes building trust between police and local communities.

While addressing residents and leaders during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Embu, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the importance of working hand-in-hand with the public to boost security. He pointed out that grassroots initiatives like Nyumba Kumi, peace committees, and joint operations between agencies have proven useful in promoting peace and solving deep-rooted conflicts.

“If we want to win on both security and service delivery, we must partner with the people,” said Murkomen.

Rising Concern Over Illicit Alcohol

Murkomen raised alarm over the widespread consumption of illegal alcohol in Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi, calling it a serious risk to public safety. He recognized the ongoing efforts by agencies like NACADA, security officers, and county governments, and assured the public that the national government will offer more support to boost the fight against these harmful substances.

Cannabis Cultivation in Mt. Kenya Forest Worries Authorities

The CS also condemned the illegal growing of cannabis in parts of the Mt. Kenya forest, describing it as a growing threat that must be curbed. He noted that teams from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the police are already involved in operations to crack down on those behind the illegal farming.

Deadly Highways and the Role of Speeding Miraa Vehicles

Turning to road safety, Murkomen linked the rising cases of fatal accidents on the busy Meru–Nairobi highway to speeding miraa transport vehicles. He said the government is working closely with KENHA, NTSA, and miraa stakeholders to introduce stricter enforcement to reduce road carnage.

Restoring Trust Between Police and the Public

Murkomen underscored the importance of rebuilding trust between citizens and law enforcers, saying that this was key to improving intelligence sharing and stopping crime before it happens. He noted that enhanced cooperation with chiefs and assistant chiefs is already bearing fruit in some areas.

The forum brought together top leaders including Runyenjes MP Eric Karemba, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, Embu County Commissioner Jack Obuo, Speaker Josiah Thiriku, and several MCAs.
