- The Ministry of Sports has set up an Audit Committee to enhance financial oversight in a bid to improve transparency and accountability within the ministry.
The Committee, led by Esther Muriithi Ndegwa, was inaugurated on Wednesday by Ministry of Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, as part of the Ministry’s efforts to achieve a Zero-Fault Audit status for the 2024/2025 financial year.
The Committee’s primary function will be to support the Ministry’s Accounting Officer, the Principal Secretary, in strengthening governance, enhancing accountability, and promoting financial stability within the ministry.
“I reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to achieving a Zero-Fault Audit status for the 2024/2025 financial year, as the committee embarks on its critical mandate,” said Mvurya.
“Given the scale and complexity of the Ministry’s projects, I have directed all officers to execute their responsibilities with diligence, in full compliance with legal frameworks, ethical standards, and sound financial management practices.”
The Audit Committee is established pursuant to Section 73 (5) of the Public Finance Management (PFM) Act, 2012, which states that, “Every national government public entity shall establish an audit committee whose composition and functions shall be as prescribed by the regulations.”
Additionally, the committee will follow up on the implementation of recommendations from both internal and external auditors to ensure the Ministry’s operations align with the highest standards of accountability.
The committee is expected to have a significant impact on the Ministry’s governance practices, ensuring that all public funds are utilized effectively and in the best interests of the country.
