A team of Kenyan police officers has officially returned home after completing their mission under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The group was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dennis Wekesa. Their homecoming was marked with a warm reception at the National Police Service (NPS) headquarters, Jogoo House.
They were received by Mr. Mathew Kutoh, SAIG, who stood in for Inspector General Douglas Kanja, commending them for their outstanding performance abroad.
Officers Applauded for Discipline and Service
Mr. Kutoh praised the returning officers, highlighting that throughout their service in Somalia, not a single disciplinary issue had been reported. He applauded them for being disciplined and committed throughout the assignment, describing them as true ambassadors of Kenya on foreign soil.
He encouraged them to apply the skills and insights they gained during the mission to enhance policing standards at home.
A Call to Uplift Local Policing Through Experience
Mr. Kutoh emphasized that the end of their deployment was not the end of duty but rather a new beginning. He encouraged the team to use their exposure to conflict management and peacekeeping strategies to uplift their colleagues and improve service in their respective stations.
“Your return marks not just the end of a successful mission, but the beginning of an opportunity to transfer those skills to your colleagues and communities,” Mr. Kutoh said.
Senior Officials Join in Celebrating the Team
Present at the event were several senior officers from the National Police Service, including Dr. Mwangi Wanderi (Director of Human Capital Development), Mr. John Kamau (Director of Reforms), Madam Joyce Kanda (Deputy Director of Human Capital Development), and Mr. Albert Masese (Staff Officer for Peace Support Operations). Their presence demonstrated the significance of the event and support for officers involved in peace missions.
Kenya’s Role in Regional Peace Reinforced
The successful return of the team is being viewed as yet another confirmation of Kenya’s strong dedication to peace and stability across the continent. Their disciplined conduct and contribution under ATMIS show the impact Kenyan officers continue to make in international missions.
