Humphrey Kayange Lands Top IOC Role Ahead of Dakar 2026

  • Former rugby sevens icon Humphrey Kayange has been named Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Dakar 2026.
  • His appointment comes after Kirsty Coventry stepped down to prepare for her new role as IOC President.
  • Kayange will now lead preparations and partnerships for the Youth Olympic Games set for Senegal.

Kenya’s rugby legend Humphrey Kayange is stepping into global leadership after being named the new Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. His appointment was confirmed by the IOC on Wednesday, April 30, in a statement noting that outgoing chair Kirsty Coventry recommended him as her successor before she transitions into her new role as IOC President.

Tasked with Steering Africa’s First Olympic Event

Kayange’s assignment is both historic and critical. Dakar 2026 marks the first time an Olympic event will be held on African soil. As Chair, his responsibility is to coordinate efforts between the IOC, host city officials, sports federations, and National Olympic Committees to ensure everything runs seamlessly ahead of the event.

Kayange’s Vision for the Youth Games

Speaking after the announcement, Kayange expressed excitement about his mission to empower and inspire young athletes worldwide.

“My vision is driven by empowering young athletes. I’m honoured to serve the Olympic Movement and help provide a platform for young people to pursue excellence. Dakar 2026 will unite young athletes from around the world, celebrating African innovation and the Olympic spirit,” he said.

His leadership is expected to bring a blend of passion, discipline, and African pride to the global event.

A Veteran in Olympic Service

This new chapter adds to Kayange’s growing resume within the global sports scene. Since 2022, he has been actively involved in the Dakar 2026 Coordination Commission. In 2021, he became an IOC Member and a representative in the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

He also sits on the Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), contributing to international efforts to ensure clean sport.

Homegrown Leadership with Global Reach

Back home, Kayange has been no stranger to leadership roles. He once chaired the National Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission and served on the board of the Kenya Academy of Sports. His past engagement with the Kenya Rugby Union further shows his deep-rooted dedication to sports development at both national and international levels.
