- 23 television channels ordered to stop broadcasting for flouting gambling ad regulations.
- Kameme TV among those accused of airing betting promos despite a 30-day suspension.
- BCLB urges immediate enforcement by Communications Authority.
- DCI has been informed to take legal steps against the non-compliant stations.
The government has taken tough action against 23 television stations, including the popular Kameme TV, following claims that they went against advertising rules on betting and gambling.
The ban comes after the media outlets reportedly ignored a one-month suspension order and continued to broadcast betting promotions with paybill and shortcode instructions.
Stations Named in Violation List
Among the affected channels are Kameme TV, Favour Life TV, Tohanchane TV, Wave Time, Yahweh TV, Swahili TV, JCDH TV, Deliverance TV, Michezo TV, and Venus TV. Others include Moja One, Repower, Happy TV, Maajabu TV, and Ngumbao TV, among several more.
The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) released the full list and said that the broadcasters knowingly broke the law, even after being warned.
BCLB Wants Immediate Enforcement
According to BCLB, the 30-day warning was ignored by all 23 stations, prompting the board to request the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) to act fast and shut down their operations.
They added that these adverts were promoting gambling activities without respecting laid-out regulations meant to protect the public.
DCI Involved in Next Legal Steps
The matter has now been escalated to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for legal proceedings. The BCLB wants those responsible for non-compliance held accountable, noting that gambling adverts must follow strict guidelines to protect vulnerable viewers.
