  • The incident happened around 2 a.m. as they danced in the rain at a nightclub.

  • Authorities say the wire was connected to a generator powering the event’s sound system.
  • Police have summoned the club’s manager, disco owner, and their contractor for questioning.

What was meant to be a lively ‘Disco Matanga’ in Oyugis Town ended in a deadly twist after two young men were electrocuted while dancing in the rain. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of the morning at a nightclub in Ragama Estate, Homa Bay County.

One of the deceased was identified as Antipus Odongo, a minor, while the identity of the other victim remains unknown. A woman who was also present at the scene suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Officials Blame Generator Connection for Accident

Confirming the incident, Oyugis West Assistant Chief Warren Omollo said the victims stepped on a naked wire believed to have been linked to a generator used to power the music system.

“The wire had no insulation and was lying on the wet ground where the victims were dancing,” the chief noted.

The soaked environment and poor wiring appear to have created the perfect storm, turning entertainment into a disaster.

Police Probe Launched as Disco Organizers Summoned

The matter is now under active police investigation. Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Philemon Saera confirmed that the nightclub’s manager, the disco operator, and the person who hired them have all been summoned for interrogation.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Recurring Disco Matanga Tragedies Raise Alarm

This is not the first time lives have been lost during Disco Matanga events, which remain controversial despite repeated government warnings. In January this year, a similar gathering in Busia County led to the deaths of two people, including one mob-lynching incident linked to a fatal stabbing during a night vigil.

These repeated cases have sparked renewed public concern over the safety of such gatherings, especially in rural areas where electricity access and safety regulations remain poor.
