Ruto Defends Butere Girls, Warns Malala Over ‘Echoes of War’ Play Saga

  • President Ruto has responded to the drama around Butere Girls’ play, Echoes of War.
  • He warned former Senator Cleophas Malala against interfering with students.
  • Ruto emphasized that the government won’t tolerate those trying to poison young minds.
  • He pledged continued support in education, including sports and the arts.
  • The President urged teachers and school heads to nurture every child’s potential.

President William Ruto has addressed the controversy that surrounded Butere Girls High School during the National Drama Festival held in Nakuru on Thursday, April 10, 2025. The school had pulled out of performing their play Echoes of War after former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala was arrested and denied access to them.

Speaking on Sunday, April 13, Ruto used the moment to caution political figures against dragging learners into politics and warned that his administration would not tolerate any attempts to twist the minds of school-going children.

A Stern Warning from the Head of State

Without mentioning Malala directly in every instance, President Ruto sent a strong message to those he believes are trying to mislead or radicalize students for political or personal gain.

“We must equally protect all our children from pedophiles, drug peddlers, and those who want to corrupt our children and teach them to hate their parents, teachers, leaders, or their nation. We must protect our children from those people,” said Ruto.

Commitment to Education and Talent

Ruto took time to highlight the importance of investing in education, calling it the strongest tool to improve Kenya’s future. He also emphasized the need to support students in various areas — not only in academics but also in talents like sports and arts.

“We must give all our children the best opportunity to be the best they can be… Whether in formal education, technical skills, the creative industry, or sports, we will give them all a fair chance,” he said.

He reminded school managers, principals, and administrators that it’s their duty to ensure each learner is nurtured according to their individual strengths.

Ruto’s message came at a time when the education sector is under scrutiny over censorship and the handling of student creativity in drama and other forms of expression.
