  • Rigathi Gachagua has raised alarm over the return of illegal alcohol in Central Kenya.
  • He accused the current administration of failing to deal with the problem, calling it a betrayal to the region.
  • His comments came after two people were hospitalized in Kangai after consuming toxic liquor.
  • The region witnessed a deadly incident in February 2024 where 17 people died from poisoned brews.
  • Gachagua made his remarks during a phone call to locals, facilitated by Kirinyaga Senator James Murango.
  • Several leaders condemned the increased bar licensing and laxity among security agencies.
  • Gachagua announced plans to unveil a new political party focused on eradicating illicit alcohol.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lashed out at the government, accusing it of ignoring the rising threat posed by illicit brews in Central Kenya.

He made the remarks via a phone call to residents of Kangai in Kirinyaga County, expressing anger over how dangerous alcohol continues to find its way into communities.

The concern follows a fresh incident where two people were rushed to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital after drinking toxic alcohol in Kangai.

February Tragedy Still Fresh

Gachagua noted that Kangai had already suffered a major blow earlier this year.

Back in February 2024, 17 people died in the same area after consuming poisonous alcohol, and he said the recent case shows the government has learned nothing.

“It’s unacceptable that this is happening again,” he said. “How can the same place suffer twice while the government watches silently?”

Leaders Visit Scene, Blame Local Authorities

The former DP’s call was placed by Senator James Murango, who visited the village accompanied by Kirinyaga Woman Rep Jane Njeri Maina and Baragwi MCA David Mathenge.

The leaders accused the county government of flooding the area with bar licenses, creating room for non-stop alcohol sales.

Senator Murango condemned the local administration for ignoring its duty, saying:

“This is not just a failure of leadership — it’s aiding a public health crisis.”

New Political Path in the Works

Gachagua revealed that he is working on launching a new political outfit next month, with a core mission to protect communities from illicit brews.

He claimed the Kenya Kwanza leadership had abandoned its responsibility and promised to step in where they’ve failed.

“Our people’s safety must come before politics. We can’t wait any longer,” he said
