- Court to give a decision on Friday.
A man identified as Samwel Mogwasi Mainga has landed in trouble for reportedly posing as June Ruto, the daughter of President William Ruto. He was apprehended in Mombasa and is facing charges tied to identity theft and impersonation.
Police say Mainga’s actions contravene Section 29 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act, 2018, which deals with online misrepresentation and fraudulent digital activity.
Court Appearance and Police Request
The suspect was brought before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday. Authorities, however, are seeking more time before proceeding further.
The prosecution asked the court to detain him for an additional seven days, arguing that critical elements of the case are still under investigation.
Why Police Need More Time
In a sworn statement, DCI officer Peter Mwangi told the court that the case is complex and sensitive, and more time is needed to recover evidence.
“Due to the nature and the complexity of this matter, it requires more days to obtain some vital information and documents related to the case,” Mwangi explained.
According to Mwangi, detectives are still working to access Mainga’s Facebook activity, record witness statements, and verify his home address to avoid the risk of him disappearing from the court’s reach.
Decision Expected Friday
The court is set to make a ruling on whether Mainga will remain in custody as requested by police. The matter is gaining attention due to the high-profile name allegedly used in the scam.
