- Most betting activities in Kenya are now done through smartphones.
- Online platforms remain the dominant betting channels across the country.
- The gambling industry is expected to contribute Ksh 20 billion to the economy in 2025.
- Authorities link this growth to proper regulation and oversight.
- A new law—The Gambling Control Bill, 2023—is expected to further tighten industry controls.
A large majority of Kenyan gamblers now rely on smartphones to place their bets, according to the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB). The board noted that the rise in mobile phone usage has made online betting platforms the most widely used channels in the country.
This growing digital trend has transformed the face of gambling, making it more accessible to thousands of users nationwide.
Industry Set for Ksh 20 Billion Boost
The BCLB projects that the betting sector will rake in approximately Ksh 20 billion in the year 2025. This includes revenue collected through excise duty, withholding tax, and the standard betting and gaming levies.
The board views this not only as a sign of popularity but also as a result of tighter enforcement of regulations.
Authorities Call for Stronger Oversight
Speaking on the matter, BCLB Acting Director General, Rose Waithera Mwikali, said the figures reflect a steady but closely monitored expansion.
“The numbers highlight how licensed gambling has become mainstream while also reminding us of the importance of maintaining firm regulatory control,” Mwikali said.
She stressed the need for continued vigilance to ensure the sector remains within legal bounds.
The Gambling Control Bill, 2023 is currently under legislative review and, once passed, is expected to introduce more stringent oversight in the betting and gaming space.
According to BCLB, the bill will help seal existing loopholes and tighten supervision over operators, safeguarding consumers while ensuring compliance with national standards.
As Kenya’s betting industry grows, authorities remain committed to balancing economic gains with responsible gambling practices.
