Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared that he will be on the ballot in 2027, responding to growing calls—especially from Gen Z—for him to seek the presidency.
Speaking during a county meeting in Nyamira, Maraga said that young Kenyans have persistently urged him to vie, citing his upright leadership and proven performance record.
“The youth have been on my neck about running for president. They believe I can offer the kind of leadership this country urgently needs,” he said.
First Consultative Meeting Held in Nyamira
Maraga was in Nyamira County on Monday for what he called his “first county hall consultation,” where he met opinion leaders and political influencers who pledged to support his ambition.
“This is just the beginning. We’ll be doing these meetings across all 47 counties. The goal is to lay proper structures that will fulfill all legal and political requirements for the race,” he noted.
He added that a team of professionals is already working behind the scenes to establish a new political party, develop a solid manifesto, and plan a national launch.
Targeting National Revival and Accountability
Maraga did not hold back in criticizing the current state of affairs in Kenya, blaming the country’s deepening crisis on corruption and failed governance.
“The government has failed to eliminate corruption, uphold the rule of law, and ensure proper healthcare. Citizens are suffering, and this country urgently needs an honest and fearless leader,” he told the gathering.
Calls for Peaceful Campaigns and Political Tolerance
The former CJ urged citizens, especially in his home county, to treat all political aspirants with respect and give them space to express their agendas.
“Let everyone be heard. Let’s avoid heckling and violence. Democracy means you can listen to ideas and still choose who you’ll vote for peacefully,” he said.
He condemned the use of goons to disrupt political events, saying such tactics do not align with his values or vision for the country.
Youth Urged to Register for 2027 Elections
To the youth, Maraga issued a rallying call—get your national IDs and prepare to vote.
“We’ll need every voice and every vote. When the registration window opens, go get listed as a voter. That’s how we’ll change this nation,” he concluded.
