The body of Sylvia Kemunto, a first-year student at Multimedia University (MMU), was discovered late Wednesday night in a water tank situated on the rooftop of a hostel at the institution.
Kemunto, who was pursuing a degree in Mass Communications and Computer Science, had been reported missing on Sunday, March 30. Her mother, Triza Kwamboka, had sent her some upkeep money via a church elder’s phone number. However, when Kwamboka tried to reach her daughter to confirm the receipt, her calls went unanswered.
Upon learning of her daughter’s disappearance, Kwamboka traveled to the campus, where she was informed by the university’s management that Sylvia was indeed missing. She subsequently reported the case to Langata Police Station.

Sylvia’s mother also shared that her daughter had mentioned another student who had been persistently making unwanted advances toward her. “Sylvia told me about a guy who was bothering her, even though she wasn’t interested. He kept pressuring her to be his friend,” Kwamboka explained.
On the day Sylvia went missing, her roommate revealed that Sylvia had gone to church, leaving her alone in the room. Sylvia’s boyfriend, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, reportedly visited the room around 1 P.M. Later, witnesses saw him dragging Sylvia’s suitcase to his hostel room in another block. His roommate confirmed seeing the suitcase, but it was gone by the next morning.
Police traced Sylvia’s phone signal to the university campus, prompting the institution’s management to initiate a search. A foul smell led the search team to a water tank on the hostel rooftop, where Sylvia’s body was discovered.
Meanwhile, the suspect believed to be involved in Sylvia’s death turned himself in to the authorities. After evading arrest since Monday, the suspect surrendered at the Sultan Hamud police station in Makueni on Thursday night, following a manhunt by DCI detectives.
