Alinur to Sudi: ‘You’ve Never Touched a Setbook, Yet You’re Criticizing Echoes of War?

  • Alinur Mohamed takes a jab at MP Oscar Sudi for dismissing Butere Girls’ controversial play Echoes of War.
  • Says Sudi lacks understanding because he didn’t read set books in high school.
  • Drama sparks nationwide debate on the role of theatre in politics and society.

Political commentator Alinur Mohamed has fired back at Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi following his remarks about the Echoes of War play staged by students from Butere Girls High School. In a sharp online response, Alinur sarcastically stated, “I don’t blame you. If you read a set book in high school, you would have understood.”

The comment has since gone viral, fueling a heated exchange between leaders, artists, and citizens.

The Play That Sparked a Storm

The drama piece, written by former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala, is said to be inspired by last year’s Gen Z protests against the Finance Bill. The play was halted after students protested police intimidation and refused to perform without their director, Malala, present.

Sudi had earlier criticized the play, suggesting it was laced with political motives — a view that many, including Alinur, have dismissed as uninformed.

Literature Isn’t For Everyone, Alinur Hints

Alinur’s statement wasn’t just a personal attack — it was a broader call to understand the power of literature and drama in shaping public thought. He argued that not everyone can grasp the depth of such plays, especially if they never engaged with literature in school.

Final Word: Know the Story Before You Condemn It

Alinur’s message was clear — before criticising creative work, try to understand the message first. The Echoes of War debate has become a national mirror, reflecting not just our politics, but also the widening gap between artistic expression and political interpretation.
