  • Serbia condemns Kenya’s recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.
  • The Serbian government warns of diplomatic and political repercussions.
  • Serbia insists Kenya’s move violates international law and UN Resolution 1244.
  • Over the years, 28 nations have revoked Kosovo’s recognition, while only two have granted it.
  • Kenya argues that recognizing Kosovo aligns with its commitment to global peace and diplomacy.

Tensions have flared between Serbia and Kenya following President William Ruto’s decision to officially recognize Kosovo as an independent state.

In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, March 27, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Kenya’s move, branding it a violation of international law and a direct breach of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, which upholds Serbia’s sovereignty.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia strongly condemns Kenya’s decision to recognize the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called ‘Kosovo’. This is a serious violation of international law and undermines efforts to maintain regional stability,” the statement read.

Strained Relations Between Serbia and Kenya

The Serbian government warned that the move jeopardizes decades of cooperation between the two nations, particularly within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) framework.

“This regrettable decision threatens the traditionally strong ties between Serbia and Kenya, which have been built on mutual respect and cooperation,” the Serbian ministry noted.

In response, Serbia vowed to take diplomatic and political measures to counter what it termed an unacceptable and unfriendly act by Kenya.

Kenya Stands Firm on Its Decision

President Ruto formally declared Kenya’s recognition of Kosovo on March 26, a move the State Department for Foreign Affairs defended as a step toward promoting international peace, security, and territorial integrity.

“Kosovo’s independence declaration in 2008 was upheld by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2010. Kenya recognizes Kosovo in alignment with its foreign policy and in strengthening its relations with nations in the Balkans,” the statement read.

Kosovo’s Controversial Independence

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but the move has remained contentious. Serbia has spent years rallying international support to prevent widespread recognition, with 28 countries withdrawing or suspending their recognition in recent years.

Despite this, Kenya has now joined the list of nations recognizing Kosovo, potentially setting the stage for increased diplomatic tensions with Serbia.
