Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has launched a scathing attack on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, blaming him for the escalating insecurity crisis in the country.

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, March 26, Cherargei accused Murkomen of being unfit to lead the security docket, arguing that his incompetence was putting Kenyan lives at risk.

“What I saw two years ago about Murkomen’s incompetence is now evident! Roads can be fixed later, but security failures cost lives, and those cannot be recovered,” Cherargei stated.

Koskei’s Intervention and Security Failures

The senator pointed out that Head of Public Service Felix Koskei recently visited the North Rift, where he issued a warning to bandits- something Cherargei believes reflects a lack of leadership from Murkomen.

“No wonder HOPS Koskei had to step in and confront bandits in North Rift over the weekend,” he remarked.

According to Cherargei, security operations were more effective under former Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, but ever since Murkomen took over, crime and terror attacks have been on the rise.

“Under Kindiki’s leadership, insecurity was largely contained. But now, under Murkomen’s watch, we are witnessing rampant gang attacks, increased terror threats in Turkana and North Eastern, and rising crime in towns,” he lamented.

He cited a recent murder near Kapsabet County Police Headquarters, barely 200 meters from the station, as a sign that even previously secure areas are now vulnerable.

Al-Shabaab Attack in Garissa

Cherargei’s remarks come just days after suspected Al-Shabaab militants stormed a National Police Reserve camp in Fafi, Garissa County, killing six people and leaving four others seriously injured.

The attack, which happened on Sunday, March 23, followed another incident where three men were abducted in Elwak, Mandera County, by suspected militants.

Murkomen took over as Interior CS in December 2024 after Kithure Kindiki was appointed Deputy President. However, with the growing security concerns, his tenure is now facing intense scrutiny.
