“When we attended the burial of Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother earlier this year, I was shocked to see entire shopping centers in Bungoma made of mud. In Central Kenya, this is unheard of,” she stated.

Mt. Kenya’s Growth Linked to Cash Crops

Chege attributed Mt. Kenya’s economic success to tea and other cash crops, which have enabled residents to access bank loans and build better homes.

“Cash crops have transformed our people’s lives. Economic empowerment is key,” she remarked.

She also noted that Nyanza remains underdeveloped, with some residents blaming their continued opposition to politics for missing out on government benefits.

Governors Must Be Accountable for Regional Development

Chege took a swipe at county governments, questioning why Turkana lacks water despite hosting the largest aquifer and receiving substantial funding.

“I don’t understand why Turkana still struggles with water scarcity. Where is the money going?” she asked.

She concluded by urging the government to ensure fair distribution of national resources so that all Kenyans benefit from development.
