  • The businessman instructed them to start paying rent from 2018, but they failed to do so.

  • His daughter, Irene Njeri, says the rent arrears have accumulated to over Ksh 2 million.

  • Residents express fear over security, urging leaders to intervene.

Drama unfolded in Riandira, Kirinyaga County, as police officers stationed in the area were evicted from their residence over unpaid rent amounting to over Ksh 2 million.

The property, initially owned by businessman Thuita, was provided to the officers rent-free. However, after he died in 2018, his daughter, Irene Njeri, insisted that the officers start paying rent, but they allegedly failed to comply.

“Before my father passed away, he told them to start paying rent. The arrears have now piled up to over Ksh 2 million, forcing us to reclaim the property and rent it to others,” Njeri stated in an interview with Inooro FM.

Residents Worried About Security

The eviction left locals in shock as officers loaded their belongings onto a lorry. Many residents expressed deep security concerns, fearing a spike in crime.

“Where are they going? They have kept this area safe since 2016. What will we do now?” wondered Grace Wanjiru, a concerned resident.

Another resident urged local leaders to intervene. “If they leave, we will be at the mercy of criminals. Even daytime robberies will become normal. The area MP should clear the rent arrears so they can stay.”

Following the eviction, Mwea West Police Commander Rashid Ali confirmed that law enforcement services would now be handled by Rukanga Police Post, located about four kilometers away.
