- Public Service CS Justin Muturi says his tenure in the cabinet depends on President Ruto’s decision.
- He remains in government as a Kenya Kwanza coalition member and an active participant in Ruto’s 2022 campaign.
- Muturi has been absent from cabinet meetings since early 2025, citing unresolved abductions and extrajudicial killings.
- He maintains he will not be silenced on the issue, even if it means losing his position.
- Kenya Kwanza leaders, led by Kimani Ichung’wah and Sylvanus Osoro, have criticized him, accusing him of using the abduction of his son for political motives.
Speaking on Citizen TV, Public Service CS Justin Muturi stated that his fate in the cabinet rests entirely in the hands of President William Ruto.
“Whether I remain in cabinet or not is a decision only the appointing authority can make. I have no idea how long I will serve, as that is solely at the President’s discretion. Whatever happens is based entirely on his will,” Muturi remarked.
At the same time, Muturi dismissed speculation about his resignation, affirming that he is legally part of Kenya Kwanza and played a crucial role in its 2022 election campaign.
“I am still in government because I belong to the coalition and was actively involved in campaigning for Kenya Kwanza. I have every right to be here,” he said.
Why Muturi Has Been Absent from Cabinet Meetings
During the interview, Muturi also shed light on his absence from President Ruto’s cabinet meetings since the beginning of 2025.
According to him, he chose to skip the meetings due to the government’s failure to address abductions and extrajudicial killings.
“Attending cabinet meetings is compulsory unless excused by the President. I have formally requested to be excused until the issue of abductions is presented in cabinet through an official memorandum,” Muturi explained.
Muturi Unfazed by Potential Dismissal
Muturi further clarified that he is not afraid of being dismissed from government for speaking out against abductions.
“When I took the oath of office, I fully understood the authority to hire and fire. If I am removed for condemning abductions and extrajudicial killings, so be it,” he asserted.
Kenya Kwanza Allies Fire Back
Muturi has been at odds with Kenya Kwanza leadership since January, when he held a press conference revealing details of his son’s abduction.
His statements have drawn criticism from President Ruto’s allies, including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who dismissed Muturi’s allegations against the National Intelligence Service (NIS) as politically motivated and misleading.
“Muturi’s claims against NIS regarding his son’s abduction are purely political,” Ichung’wah said in an Al Jazeera interview.
Additionally, National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro accused Muturi of disrespecting the government by airing grievances publicly rather than addressing them internally.
