Former Chief Justice David Maraga has stated that if allowed to lead Kenya, he would ensure that everyone strictly follows the law.

Speaking at the People Dialogue Festival on Thursday, March 6, Maraga pointed out that Kenya’s biggest challenge is leaders who ignore the law for personal gain. He emphasized that corruption remains the country’s biggest issue, as funds meant for public projects are often misused.

“The real problem affecting Kenya and many African nations is corruption. If we tackle corruption, most of our issues will be solved,” Maraga said.

He added that enforcing the law would automatically bring order to the country.

“If I were given the chance to lead, I would make sure that everyone obeys the law. Once that happens, everything else will fall into place,” he remarked.

Criticism of Term Extensions and Judiciary Petitions

Maraga also criticized leaders seeking to extend the presidential term limit, arguing that it stems from self-interest rather than public service.

“Our Constitution is one of the best, but the problem is corruption and greed. Leaders want power to enrich themselves, which is why they resist implementing the Constitution properly,” he said.

He also dismissed the petitions seeking to remove Supreme Court judges, calling them baseless and driven by personal interests.

“People are coming up with false allegations that have no basis. If you read the petitions against Supreme Court judges, you will see where the real problem lies,” he stated.

With the 2027 elections approaching, Maraga is among the names being considered as potential presidential candidates. However, he has yet to publicly declare his intention to run.
