The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) has strongly refuted allegations circulating against the union, terming them baseless, defamatory, and driven by personal vendetta.

In a statement issued on March 22, COTU dismissed the claims as an attempt to tarnish its reputation, insisting that it has always prioritized employee welfare, including timely salary payments.

“These false allegations misrepresent facts and are clearly aimed at misleading the public,” the statement read.

Salary Delays Linked to Fraudulent Accountant

COTU clarified that salary payments have never been an issue, except for a single incident where a former payroll accountant attempted to fraudulently increase his own salary.

The union believes the disgruntled ex-employee, who was dismissed after the incident, is the source of the allegations.

“The only instance of delayed salaries occurred when a former payroll accountant, who we suspect is behind these false claims, manipulated the payroll for personal gain.”

COTU further revealed that the individual was hired after making a personal appeal to Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, but later betrayed the trust placed in him.

Ex-Employees Left on Their Terms

Addressing claims of unfair dismissals, COTU maintained that all former employees left voluntarily to pursue better opportunities.

Jacqueline Njambi joined the National Employment Authority under the Ministry of Labour.

Selina Ngei secured a new role in Tanzania with an organization affiliated with COTU.

Nnamdi Iliobachie, a Nigerian national, resigned to reunite with his family.

Irene Kendi left due to personal reasons.

“All former employees have moved on to senior roles in both the private sector and government. Their dues were settled, and none have raised complaints,” COTU confirmed.

Payroll Accountant’s Dismissal Was Due to Gross Misconduct

COTU emphasized that the only employee dismissed was the payroll accountant, whose short tenure of four months was marred by fraud, negligence, and tampering with the union’s logo.

“While still under probation, he attempted to manipulate the payroll and alter COTU’s official logo for personal gain.”

Despite his gross misconduct, the union chose not to take legal action against him.

COTU reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and integrity, urging the public to disregard misleading allegations.
