Kenyan Government Spent KSh523.85 Million on Raila Odinga’s AU Bid, Report Reveals

A Parliamentary report has revealed that the Kenyan government spent KSh523.85 million of taxpayer money to support former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

The funds primarily covered chartered flights that enabled Odinga to tour at least 40 African nations to drum up support. Other costs included hotel accommodation, airport transfers, and promotional efforts.

Treasury Justified Spending Under Article 223

According to the report, the National Treasury sanctioned the expenditure under Article 223 of the Constitution. This provision allows the government to withdraw funds from the Consolidated Fund Services without prior Parliamentary approval, provided the spending is approved within two months.
