A total of 73 police officers who sustained injuries while on duty have received assistive devices donated by the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re). The equipment, which includes wheelchairs, hearing aids, white canes, and orthopedic shoes, was officially handed over to the National Police Service (NPS) during an event at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi.

Field Assessment and Distribution of Devices

According to the NPS, the donation follows an initial batch of assistive devices provided last year by Kenya Re under the leadership of Group Managing Director Dr. Hillary Wachinga. To ensure officers received the appropriate support, a field assessment was conducted to determine the specific needs of each beneficiary.

IG Kanja Appreciates Kenya Re’s Support

Speaking at the event, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja expressed gratitude to Kenya Re for their dedication to assisting officers with disabilities. He emphasized that the devices would significantly improve mobility and independence for the affected officers. IG Kanja also reassured officers of his continued support as they carry out their duties across the country.

Establishment of Support Offices for Disabled Officers

To further assist officers with disabilities, the police chief directed that a dedicated office be established at the NPS Headquarters and the NPS Hospital. These offices will streamline the processing of claims and provide ongoing support for officers in need.

Kenya Re’s Continued Commitment to Police Welfare

Kenya Re’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Hillary Wachinga, reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to supporting the National Police Service. He noted that their assistance would extend beyond assistive devices to include addressing mental health challenges among officers.

The event was attended by senior officials, including Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Administration Police Service (APS) Gilbert Masengeli, Commandant of NPC Embakasi ‘A’ Campus Davies Lomwatu, Principal Deputy to the DIG-APS Masoud Mwinyi, and Director of Chaplaincy, Counselling, and Psychosocial Support Vincent Makokha.
