  • She claims no major development projects have been completed despite efforts by MPs, CSs, PSs, and MCAs.
  • The former governor is battling legal challenges after her removal from office.

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has taken a jab at local leaders, claiming that her impeachment remains the only notable achievement they have delivered in over two years.

Speaking on Monday, March 24, ahead of President William Ruto’s tour of Mt. Kenya, Mwangaza lamented the lack of tangible development in Meru County, despite the involvement of MPs, Senators, Cabinet Secretaries (CSs), Principal Secretaries (PSs), and MCAs.

“As we await President Ruto’s development tour in Mt. Kenya, I must highlight a hard truth: Meru’s 11 MPs, Senator, CSs, PSs, and 47 MCAs have worked together for two and a half years, yet the only project they completed is ‘The Kawira Mwangaza Impeachment Project’,” she remarked.

Mwangaza’s tenure as Meru Governor was marked by a series of impeachment attempts and legal battles, ultimately leading to her removal from office.

First Impeachment (December 2022) – Collapsed due to procedural failures, as the motion was not debated and forwarded to the Senate within the legal timeframe.

Second Impeachment Attempt – The High Court directed MCAs and Mwangaza to seek mediation from Njuri Ncheke elders, but the elders declined, citing constitutional limitations.

Final Impeachment (August 8, 2024) – The MCAs successfully impeached Mwangaza, with the Senate upholding the decision on August 21, 2024.

The Senate found her guilty of gross constitutional violations, misconduct, and abuse of office, with 26 senators backing the charges.

Determined to fight her removal, Mwangaza moved to the High Court, but Justice Bahati Mwamuye upheld the Senate’s decision on March 14, 2025, ruling that she was given a fair hearing.

Following this ruling, she rushed to the Court of Appeal, seeking to block her deputy, Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, from being sworn in. However, the legal challenge did not stop the process.

On Monday, March 17, Mutuma was officially sworn in as the 4th Governor of Meru at Mwendantu Grounds, taking over leadership despite Mwangaza’s ongoing appeal.
