‘I’ve Heard You’ – Maraga Responds to Youth-Led Movement Calling for His Presidency

  • Gen Z Protests Spark Talks of Alternative Leadership as Maraga Weighs Presidential Run
  • Gen Z protests in June 2024 fueled discussions on new leadership options.
  • Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, Fred Matiang’i, and David Maraga emerged as key names.
  • Maraga acknowledges public calls but remains undecided on his presidential bid.
  • Political bigwigs dismiss potential challengers, including Matiang’i.
  • Analysts suggest rising discontent could reshape Kenya’s political landscape.

During the height of the Gen Z-led anti-government protests in June 2024, as crowds chanted “Ruto must go”, conversations about alternative leadership gained momentum. Among the names that resonated with the public were Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.

Maraga: “I Am Still Consulting”

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Maraga acknowledged the growing support from young Kenyans but stated that he had not yet made a decision on whether to run against President William Ruto in the next elections.

“That request has been made,” Maraga confirmed. “I am consulting with various stakeholders, and at the right time, we will make an announcement.”

“No Magic in Leading Another Arm of Government”

Maraga, a known critic of corruption and impunity, hinted that transitioning to the presidency was well within his capabilities.

“I have led one arm of government before. There is no magic in leading another,” he remarked, fueling speculation about his potential bid.

Ruto and Raila Downplay the Threat

Despite the increasing talk about new political figures, key players like President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have dismissed the idea that leaders like Matiang’i could pose a serious challenge.

Raila, while addressing supporters in Kisii County, Matiang’i’s home turf, brushed off his presidential aspirations, leading to backlash from some quarters.

A Political Shift on the Horizon?

While Matiang’i and Maraga are often viewed as political outsiders, analysts argue that public frustration with governance is creating an opening for new faces. With Gen Z voters becoming more assertive and discontent rising, Kenya’s political landscape may be shifting faster than expected.
