The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched an investigation into a Chief Magistrate following allegations that she solicited and received bribes from individuals facing criminal charges in her court.
According to EACC, the magistrate is suspected of using Patrick Njeri Muriithi, a court clerk, as an intermediary to collect money from accused persons seeking favorable rulings. Investigators believe these funds were obtained through corrupt dealings.
Raids Uncover Suspected Corruption Proceeds
On Thursday, March 13, 2025, EACC officers, armed with search warrants, raided the homes of both the magistrate and the court clerk in search of key evidence. During the operation, detectives recovered Ksh 2,070,000 in cash, hidden inside a laptop bag at Hon. Atambo’s residence. Several documents linked to the case were also seized.
Following the search, Hon. Atambo and Mr. Muriithi were taken to EACC headquarters for questioning and statement recording as investigations intensified.
Judiciary Under Fresh Scrutiny
This scandal places the judiciary under renewed scrutiny, with concerns rising over corruption within the legal system. The judiciary, often seen as the last line of justice, has previously faced criticism over bribery claims, and this case has once again raised questions about its integrity.
EACC has urged the public to provide any relevant information that may aid the investigation, reaffirming its commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability within the judiciary.
