The youngest son of former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, Emmanuel, has called on Kenyans to stop ridiculing his family following his father’s death on February 20, 2025.
In a viral video, Emmanuel expressed shock and disappointment over how some Kenyans were celebrating his father’s passing, despite his contributions to the country.
“I have never seen Kenyans unite in celebrating the death of a fellow Kenyan as I have seen people rejoice and ridicule us,” he lamented.
Blames Political Resentment Over 2022 Election
Emmanuel suggested that some Kenyans were still bitter about the 2022 General Election, leading them to mock his father’s death.
“He did his work with respect and in adherence to the constitution because our father valued the law and never went against it,” Emmanuel, 25, stated.
“Maybe things didn’t go as some Kenyans expected, and because he upheld the law, they are now mocking us online.”
A Plea for Respect Amid Mourning
Emmanuel made a heartfelt appeal for Kenyans to let his family grieve in peace.
“Please let us honour and lay Mzee to rest with respect. Please don’t mock us.”
He also revealed that his older brothers have chosen to grieve privately as the family comes to terms with their loss.
“This is very painful for us as a family. My brothers may not want to see this video because they prefer to keep our matters private, but I have chosen to speak out.”
Denies Corruption Allegations
Emmanuel dismissed claims that his father was involved in corruption during his tenure as IEBC chairman.
“Some people have associated him with corruption, but our father never engaged in corruption. He always carried out his responsibilities in accordance with the law.”
His emotional plea has sparked mixed reactions, with some Kenyans sympathizing with the family, while others remain critical of Chebukati’s role in the controversial 2022 election.
