  • Djibouti’s Moussa Mohamed Omar dismissed Ruto’s claim that Africa lost an opportunity with Raila’s defeat.
  • He insisted that 33 African leaders made the right choice in electing Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as AUC Chairperson.
  • President William Ruto expressed disappointment, saying Raila was the best candidate for the role.
  • Raila conceded defeat while Ruto praised his commitment and hard work during the campaign.
  • Youssouf took a more diplomatic approach, thanking Ruto for his congratulatory message.

Moussa Mohamed Omar, Director of Communications at Djibouti’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has hit out at President William Ruto over his remarks regarding Raila Odinga’s loss in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson election.

Speaking at a dinner event hours after Raila conceded defeat to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Ruto lamented that Africa had missed out on a great leader.

“I regret that Africa missed being served by the finest. Baba made me very proud. He was the best candidate we could have put forward,” Ruto stated.

In response, Moussa Mohamed Omar dismissed Ruto’s sentiments, arguing that Africa deserved better than Raila.

“Claiming Africa ‘lost an opportunity’ is dishonest. 33 heads of state chose Mahmoud—the right choice for Africa’s challenges—refusing to let the AU be hostage to Kenyan domestic politics. Africa deserved better than Raila,” Moussa posted on X.

Despite Raila’s disappointing loss, Ruto praised him for his dedication, stating that he engaged key stakeholders and did his best.

“I’m very proud of Raila. He did his best, and regardless of the outcome, he made us proud,” Ruto added.

Mahmoud Youssouf’s Response

Unlike his spokesperson’s stronger criticism, newly elected AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf responded with a diplomatic tone.

Acknowledging Ruto’s congratulations, Youssouf extended an olive branch while subtly reinforcing his legitimacy.

“I thank HE pdt [sic] William Ruto for congratulating me on my victory. He is the African champion for reforms. I am honored to work with him to advance our continental agenda. Asanti sana Mzee,” Mahmoud posted.

His response contrasted sharply with that of his communications chief, signaling an effort to maintain positive diplomatic relations with Kenya.
