- Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi made a dramatic escape from police officers outside the Kiambu Law Courts, fleeing on a motorbike amidst chanting supporters.
- The incident occurred after Koimburi and fellow politicians held a press briefing following the extension of his cash bail.
- As supporters sang and celebrated, the MP seized the opportunity to escape, with police officers seen chasing after him.
Earlier, Koimburi had requested the court to exempt him from taking a plea on a charge of Contempt of Court, but the request was denied. The court ordered him to proceed with the legal process, including entering a plea of guilty or not guilty and facing trial.
Prosecution Counsels Evelyn Onunga and Benjamin Kelwon informed the court that the legislator had violated his bail terms, leading to the forfeiture of his Ksh. 100,000 cash bail. As a result, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opposed his temporary release.
Koimburi was initially charged on April 26, 2021, for allegedly forging academic documents and was granted a Ksh. 100,000 bond. However, after failing to appear in court, an arrest warrant was issued on September 16, 2021, resulting in the forfeiture of his bail.
The Dramatic Escape
Following his latest arraignment, the court had granted him release on a Ksh. 200,000 cash bail. However, as police prepared to take him into custody, Koimburi made a daring escape on a motorbike, aided by the chaos created by his supporters.
Videos circulating online show the MP being whisked away on the motorbike, with police officers attempting to chase him down. His supporters, who had gathered outside the court, cheered and chanted as he fled the scene.
Police Intensify Manhunt
With Koimburi now on the run, police have intensified efforts to track him down. Authorities have warned that anyone found aiding or harboring the MP will face legal consequences.
The escape has sparked mixed reactions, with some condemning the MP’s actions as a disregard for the rule of law, while others have praised his supporters for standing by him.
The incident has raised questions about the security measures at courthouses and the challenges law enforcement faces in handling high-profile cases. As the manhunt continues, the public awaits further developments in this unfolding drama.
For now, George Koimburi remains at large, with his next move uncertain.
