Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been named the African Cargo Airport of the Year 2024 at the STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo. The prestigious recognition was awarded during a gala dinner in Nairobi on Thursday, February 22.

Strategic Growth in Air Cargo

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) attributed this award to JKIA’s world-class infrastructure, strategic location, and efficiency in cargo operations. The airport has positioned itself as a key hub in Africa’s growing air cargo industry, driven by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

AfCFTA has boosted intra-African trade by 25% and increased demand for cargo transport by 50%, making JKIA’s role even more vital in regional and international trade.

Record-Breaking Cargo Handling

According to KAA data, JKIA processed 112,000 tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of 2024, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s busiest cargo hubs.

“This recognition highlights JKIA’s commitment to facilitating trade and logistics across Africa,” said Dr. Rose Koros, JKIA’s General Manager, during the award ceremony.

The airport is crucial in exporting high-value goods, with fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and specialty products making up 80% of Africa’s air cargo exports.

Commitment to Excellence

Dr. Koros reiterated JKIA’s dedication to continuous improvement, ensuring efficiency in cargo handling and positioning the airport as a global leader in air freight logistics.
