  • Police in Embu arrested a driver and seized 1,500 kg of donkey meat during a midnight operation.
  • Over 15 donkey carcasses, hides, and private parts were discovered in a Toyota Hiace van.
  • Authorities are investigating the source and destination of the meat.
  • Public health officials are urging caution regarding uninspected meat.

Police in Embu intercepted a Toyota Hiace van along the Kiritiri-Embu Highway around midnight, uncovering a shocking load of donkey meat. Upon inspection, officers found over 15 donkey carcasses packed in sacks, alongside 15 donkey hides and private parts, which were suspected to be intended for an illicit market.

One suspect, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and is currently being held at Itabua Police Station. Authorities are interrogating him to determine the source and intended destination of the meat.

“This illegal trade poses a serious public health risk, and we are committed to halting such activities,” said an officer involved in the operation.

Public Health Concerns

The seizure has raised concerns among residents and health officials, who are warning the public to be cautious when purchasing meat.

“We are heightening vigilance to ensure uninspected meat is removed from the market to prevent the risk of infections,” said John Njagi, the Embu West Sub-County Public Health Officer.

Investigations into the illegal trade of donkey meat are ongoing.
