- KNEC’s website crashed immediately after the 2024 KCSE results were released.
- Candidates faced difficulties accessing results, with error messages appearing.
- Helpline numbers were overwhelmed, and no official communication was issued about the issue.
The release of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results was marred by technical issues as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website crashed just moments after the results were announced. Candidates and parents who were eagerly awaiting the results faced frustration as they were unable to access the scores.
Website Crash and Helpline Overload
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba unveiled the results shortly after noon, directing candidates to the KNEC results portal at https://results.knec.ac.ke to check individual scores. However, attempts to access the site were met with error messages such as, “This page isn’t working” and “This site can’t be reached.”
To assist with issues, Ogamba provided two toll-free helpline numbers (0800724900 and 0800721410). Unfortunately, these lines were overwhelmed by the volume of calls, and many candidates and parents struggled to get through.
Change in Access System
This year’s results release marked a shift away from the traditional SMS-based system, which had been used to quickly access scores by texting index numbers to a short code. The SMS service was discontinued after the 2023 results due to technical challenges and cost concerns. The new online system was expected to provide a more efficient service, but the crash demonstrated the difficulties of depending on a single access point during peak demand times.
Frustration and Social Media Outcry
As of Thursday afternoon, KNEC had not issued an official update regarding the downtime or any alternative solutions for candidates. The glitch caused widespread frustration, and many took to social media to express their concerns and demand swift action from KNEC.
While the 2024 KCSE results were eagerly anticipated, the technical issues with the KNEC website highlighted challenges in the new system. Candidates and parents are calling for improved access and timely resolutions from KNEC to ensure that future releases run smoothly.
