China Square, a personal and household merchandise retailer, has expanded its footprint in Kenya by opening its sixth outlet at Two Rivers Mall, Nairobi. This move is part of the company’s aggressive growth strategy since its debut in 2022.

Strategic Growth and Location Importance

The new outlet spans 75,000 square feet, making it one of the largest retail spaces within Two Rivers Mall. China Square’s Managing Director, Lei Cheng, emphasized the strategic value of this location due to its size, potential customer base, and ample parking.

The retailer plans to further its expansion, with a seventh branch set to open at Greenspan Mall in Donholm next week.

Boost to Two Rivers Mall

China Square’s entry has significantly boosted Two Rivers Mall, increasing its occupancy rate from 85% to 95%. According to James Mworia, CEO of Centum Investments Company Plc, the outlet occupies 10% of the mall’s space, enhancing foot traffic and benefiting other businesses within the complex.

Overcoming Challenges

China Square’s rapid growth has not been without challenges. In early 2023, the retailer faced criticism from local traders and political factions due to its low pricing strategy. Despite these hurdles, the company has remained steadfast, cementing its role in Kenya’s retail industry.

A Growing Hub of Commerce

Two Rivers Mall is evolving into a dynamic commercial hub, housing major brands like Carrefour and attracting international players like Teleperformance to its Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The SEZ spans 64 acres, part of the 106-acre Two Rivers development, positioning the area as a center for retail and innovation.

China Square’s sixth outlet at Two Rivers Mall underscores its commitment to growth and innovation in Kenya’s retail market. As the company continues to expand, its presence is expected to drive economic activity and redefine the shopping experience for Kenyans.
