In a shocking incident, two police officers in Elgeyo Marakwet County have been charged with stealing and slaughtering a cow reported missing at Kaptagat Police Station.
The officers, Chrispus Murakhi Butali and Samwel Mbugua Njuguna, were apprehended after allegedly being caught in the act of butchering the cow. The animal belonged to a local resident who had reported its disappearance.
Investigators, led by senior police officers from Keiyo South, processed the scene and found evidence linking the officers to the crime.
The two were arraigned at the Iten Law Courts and charged with stock theft, killing an animal with intent to steal, and handling stolen goods. Both pleaded not guilty and were released on bail.
The case is set for mention on January 2, 2025.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who staged protests outside Kaptagat Police Station, demanding compensation for three cows allegedly connected to the case. The area MCA intervened to restore calm as tensions escalated.
