- National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced MPs will use the SGR to attend the EALA Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, set for December 6–18, 2024.
- The directive aligns with cost-saving measures.
- Additional House sittings were scheduled to address key legislative matters, including President William Ruto’s State of the Nation Address on November 21, 2024.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has introduced measures aimed at cost efficiency in parliamentary operations. On November 19, 2024, he informed Members of Parliament of their travel arrangements for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Parliamentary Games, emphasizing the use of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Cost-Saving Travel Directive
In a bid to cut costs, Speaker Wetangula directed MPs to use the SGR for their journey to Mombasa. “SGR is cost-effective and will enable the majority of MPs to travel conveniently,” he stated, adding that MPs could liaise with the Clerk’s office to facilitate their travel plans.
The games, scheduled from December 6 to 18, bring together legislators from East Africa to foster regional cooperation and camaraderie.
Additional Parliamentary Sittings
To ensure critical legislative matters are addressed before the December festivities, Wetangula announced extended National Assembly sittings.
The adjusted schedule includes:
- Monday, November 25: Afternoon and evening sittings.
- Friday, November 29: Morning sitting.
- Monday, December 2: Afternoon sitting.
These additional sessions will enable deliberations on pressing legislative matters and preparations for President William Ruto’s State of the Nation Address, set for Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 2.30 pm.
The Speaker’s directives reflect a commitment to both fiscal prudence and legislative efficiency. With critical matters on the agenda and the EALA games fostering regional unity, MPs face a packed schedule as the year draws to a close.
