  • Carrefour’s Kisumu CBD store at Mega Plaza will close on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
  • Employees from the closing outlet will be redeployed to other stores in Kisumu, such as United Mall.
  • The closure is attributed to low customer traffic and possible tenancy issues.
  • Carrefour Kenya operates 25 outlets nationwide.

Majid Al Futtaim, the franchise owner of Carrefour in Kenya, has announced plans to shut down its Kisumu CBD outlet at Mega Plaza. The closure, effective November 30, 2024, aligns with Carrefour’s strategic evaluation to optimize operations across Kenya.

Strategic Closure

Carrefour’s decision to close its Mega Plaza store comes after ten months of persistently low customer traffic. Reports also suggest that tenancy disagreements might have influenced the retailer’s move.

Despite the closure, Carrefour emphasized its commitment to employees by ensuring no job losses. Affected staff will be reassigned to other outlets within Kisumu, such as the United Mall location along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

Commitment to Staff

In an internal memo, Carrefour reassured employees about the transition, stating:
“We are committed to supporting our colleagues during this transition and minimizing disruptions to their roles.”

Carrefour Kenya continues to expand its footprint with 25 stores countrywide. However, the Mega Plaza previously occupied by Nakumatt and Tuskys-struggled to sustain high foot traffic, leading to its closure.

The closure of Carrefour’s Kisumu CBD outlet marks a strategic step in refining its operations in Kenya. While challenges like low traffic and tenancy issues influenced the decision, the retailer’s efforts to redeploy staff underline its dedication to employee welfare.
