Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Durk, known off-stage as Durk Devontay Banks, was recently arrested in Broward County, Florida, on charges of murder-for-hire, according to US news sources. The arrest comes shortly after the indictment of five members associated with Banks’ Only The Family (OTF) hip-hop group, accused of orchestrating a retaliatory shooting in 2022. This latest development deepens the legal troubles for the 33-year-old Chicago-based rapper, who has built a successful music career but remains linked to violent incidents in the drill rap scene.

Lil Durk, who founded the OTF collective in 2010, has frequently been at the center of Chicago’s drill rap culture, which often intersects with real-life rivalries and violence. His group gained media attention following the 2020 killing of emerging rapper King Von, an OTF member. Media sources report that the recent indictments involve the alleged planning of a 2022 shooting targeting Quando Rondo’s cousin, in what officials say was revenge for Von’s death.

The new allegations suggest that financial incentives and promises of music industry opportunities were offered by a co-conspirator to individuals willing to participate in the shooting. Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, was fatally shot during the incident, though Rondo and his sister escaped unharmed.

In addition to the murder-for-hire charge, Lil Durk has faced various legal issues in recent years. In 2020, he and King Von were implicated in a non-fatal shooting in Atlanta, though those charges were later dismissed. This month, the mother of another Chicago rapper, FBG Duck, filed a lawsuit implicating Banks, OTF, and King Von in her son’s 2020 shooting death, underscoring the ongoing violence intertwined with Chicago’s hip-hop scene.

As Lil Durk faces this serious charge, the case casts a spotlight on the broader issues of violence within the drill rap scene and the legal challenges faced by some of its most prominent figures. With this latest arrest, Lil Durk’s music career and public image face significant uncertainty, as he remains a figure at the crossroads of fame, talent, and controversy.
