  • Kithure Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony, originally set for Saturday, has been delayed.
  • The event was paused due to a court order issued by Justice Chacha Mwita.
  • The order suspends the appointment of a new Deputy President until October 24.

The swearing-in of Deputy President designate Kithure Kindiki has been postponed following recent legal developments. Initially scheduled for Saturday morning at Uhuru Gardens, the event was halted due to conservatory orders issued by the High Court.

Preparations for Kindiki’s oath of office were progressing as planned until Friday, when Justice Chacha Mwita issued an order preventing the appointment of a new Deputy President until October 24. The court order was in response to an urgent application filed by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, representing Rigathi Gachagua, the recently impeached former Deputy President.

Kindiki’s appointment had been approved by the National Assembly earlier this week, but the legal challenge has placed his official swearing-in on hold. The High Court’s ruling means that Kindiki will have to wait until the constitutional issues raised in Gachagua’s petition are addressed.

Justice Mwita has forwarded the case to Chief Justice Martha Koome, who will appoint a bench of High Court judges to examine the significant legal concerns. The outcome of this review will determine whether the swearing-in of Kindiki can proceed.

The delay in Kithure Kindiki’s swearing-in as Deputy President underscores the ongoing legal battles surrounding the office following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. The court will address the constitutional issues before deciding the fate of the appointment, with the next hearing set for October
