  • Igembe South sub-county faces a severe shortage of condoms, raising concerns over rising STI rates and unplanned pregnancies.
  • Local health officials urge immediate government intervention as free supplies have run out for several months, leaving residents at risk.

Igembe South sub-county in Meru is facing a critical shortage of condoms, sparking fears of increased rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies. This shortage has left residents vulnerable, and public health officials are calling for urgent government action to resolve the crisis.

John Muriungi, the deputy public health officer of Igembe South, highlighted that the region has been without protective contraceptives for months, putting the community at greater risk of contracting STIs like HIV, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Despite the high demand, there has been no supply to meet the needs of the residents.

Muriungi explained that the economic challenges faced by many individuals prevent them from purchasing condoms, further exacerbating the situation. The public health department, which had been distributing condoms for free, now fears a looming public health disaster if the shortage persists.

According to the Aids Healthcare Foundation Kenya, Kenyans require around 400 million condoms annually, with an average daily usage of 17,000. Although condoms are available for sale, most citizens rely on the free ones, which constitute 80% of the market.

In response to these pressing needs, Muriungi appealed to both national and county governments to expedite the supply of condoms, emphasizing their role in preventing the spread of STIs and unplanned pregnancies.

The condom shortage in Igembe South threatens to have long-term health consequences if not addressed promptly. Health officials and residents are hoping for swift government action to mitigate the risks facing the community.
