Professor Kithure Kindiki is poised to become Kenya’s new Deputy President if Parliament approves his nomination today. His swearing-in ceremony is planned for this Saturday in Mombasa, in time for the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale. The announcement follows the submission of his name to the National Assembly by President William Ruto.
During a special parliamentary session on Friday, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that the president had formally nominated Kindiki to fill the Deputy President vacancy. MPs are now tasked with voting to either endorse or reject his candidacy. According to the Constitution, the vote requires only a simple majority for approval, not a two-thirds majority.
“I have received a message from the president regarding the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy in the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” Wetang’ula said
Kindiki, who is currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, has a long political history. He was the Senator for Tharaka Nithi County for two terms, representing the region for 10 years. In the 2022 general election, Kindiki was considered a strong contender to be President Ruto’s running mate, although Rigathi Gachagua was eventually chosen for the role.
If approved by Parliament, Professor Kithure Kindiki will be sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President. His appointment would mark another significant milestone in his political career, having already held key roles in government. The coming days will reveal whether Kindiki will officially assume this new position.
