The eight-time NBA All-Star retired in 2009 after an 18-year career with the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets.
“Dikembe Mutombo was larger than life,” stated NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
“On the field, he was one of the best shot-blocking and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the court, he dedicated his heart and soul to assisting others.”
Murombo, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was discovered while studying at Georgetown University and was later drafted by the Nuggets. He was named the NBA’s overall winner four times in 1991.
When he won, his style of play won the hearts of many people with his technique earning him a loyal fan base.
He was well-known for his defensive play, leading the NBA in blocked shots for five years and scoring per game for a record three.
After retiring, the Hawks and Nuggets retired his number 55 jersey, and in 2015, he was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame.
Mutombo served as the NBA’s international ambassador and supported humanitarian efforts in his home country.
