- Mwangi, popularly known as ‘Makanga Bae,’ died following a tragic accident, and the family claims they were sidelined by his friends in the funeral plans.
The family of the late Gerald Mwangi, also known as ‘Makanga Bae,’ has voiced their displeasure over the handling of his funeral, accusing his friends of excluding them from important decisions. In a video clip from the funeral, held in Kiambu County on Wednesday, emotional family members were seen expressing their frustration, questioning the lack of involvement in the use of funds donated to give Mwangi a proper send-off.
“We as a family were not happy. If Gerald had passed without you knowing him, we would have buried him ourselves. But now that we are burying him like this, we are not comfortable. Even as we lay him to rest, it feels wrong.”One family member spoke with visible anger.
“His mother was not called to go buy a coffin. We haven’t spent even a shilling, and no one asked us to. If there are people in the group who know, it hurts us deeply. We were ready to bury Gerald ourselves but handed everything to his friends. Why are you doing this to us? What did we do wrong to them?” He added that Gerald’s mother was excluded from purchasing the coffin and other funeral arrangements.
The family member further revealed that the emotional toll had pushed Gerald’s parent to contemplate suicide due to the conflict in the funeral group, urging everyone to respect the deceased if they could not respect the living.
Gerald Mwangi, who earned the nickname ‘Makanga Bae’ due to his striking appearance and long hair, worked as a conductor in Nairobi’s public transport sector. His charm and good looks made him a favorite among many, especially young women. Mwangi tragically lost his life after an accident two weeks ago, succumbing to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The funeral of Gerald Mwangi has left his family in distress, not only mourning his loss but also feeling sidelined in the process of laying him to rest. As the family grieves, they hope for respect and understanding, both for the memory of Gerald and for the healing of their wounds during this difficult time.
