What Next For Bukhungu Stadium?

Kakamega’s Bukhungu Stadium was closed for renovations in March 2024.As communicated earlier from the Ministry of sports together with the County Government of Kakamega,the renovations were to take a period of 4 months.

The stadium was closed to be upgraded for the upcoming African Nations Championships (CHAN). It’s now six months since the stadium was closed and there are no chances of being opened soon.

Speaking during the site visit before the closure, Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba promised that the stadium will be renovated for a 4 months time frame.He promised that a raft of renovations including lighting, changing rooms and natural ground converted to CAF standards among others will be carried out during closure.

“Bukhungu is a famous ground synonymous with the history of football,home to greatest footballers and our collaboration is about completing it to international Status.” Namwamba said.

A total of 475 million shillings was pumped for the completion of the first phase of the renovations.

During the site visit in February, Kakamega County Governor Fernandez Barasa said that the stadium update is in it’s second phase and the county government pumped in 400 million.

Some of the renovations that should be completed as at now at Bukhungu Stadium is building the VIP stands, building terraces,gym room,six changing rooms among others.

The renovations are on hold and yet the time frame is over.The playing surface is flooded with rain water,what next for Bukhungu Stadium?
