Douglas Kanja, the Inspector General of the National Police Service, was sworn in Thursday afternoon at the Supreme Court.

This marks the start of his tenure as the fifth Inspector General of Police under the 2010 constitution.

He succeeds Japhet Koome, who resigned in July amid a wave of GenZ protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.

Kanja was accompanied by his family to the swearing-in ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

He was sworn in a few hours after President William Ruto listed his name in the government gazette to take the position.

This follows the National Assembly’s approval on Wednesday. He had previously been cleared by the Senate after vetting.

Kanja was a former Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police under Japhet Koome

He had previously served as the Commander of the GSU unit.
