A 24-year old lady based in Bungoma, Gift Nakhumicha, has disclosed that her uncle raped her twice at the age of 12, but her grandparents called her a liar and beat her up. Gift mentioned that her father brought her to live with her grandmother, however, she had to run away from home to escape the maltreatment.
“My family is the reason I can’t go back home. He raped me twice at the age of 12, and I told my about it but they beat me up. They shaved my head put a block on my head and poured a bowl of water mixed with pepper on me. At one point, I wanted to take poison but a friend advised me and encouraged me. I stayed with my friend in Bungoma until she travelled. I was 14years then.” She said.
Gift noted that she had suicidal thoughts, but her friend advised her against it. Eventually she moved to Nairobi with her friend to work. Unfortunately she didn’t manage to get the work. According to Gift, she had no place to lay her head. She decided to start prostitution to cater for her own needs.” I had no choice, so I became a prostitute because I needed to pay my rent. Even with that, I don’t make that much money.” she added. Some months later, Gift was lucky and got employed as a house maid in one of her neighbor’s house in Nairobi. She settled there since she wasn’t required to pay any rent as her employer had provided accommodation to her. Gift did the perfect job and her salary was increased by 5%.
Gift worked there for more than 5years heading to the 6th year. For all that period she used to save part of her salary in her savings account. She then opted to willingly leave the job and be employed by herself. She then requested for a permission to leave the job and her boss okayed her. She then shifted to her own house since her savings enabled her to pay her rent. She started her own business. She opened up a hotel under her own management. In the first month the hotel ran smoothly, but in the second and the third month, the hotel had started being unstable since the customers misbehaved e.g. taking food on credit, reversal of money among others leading to the decline in the realization of profit.
Gift started worrying about the state of her hotel. She looked for ways to stabilize her hotel, she then contacted her friend to offer some help to her.
