A young politician from the gold-rich region between Migori and Kuria has shared his inspiring journey of overcoming poverty to fund his campaigns and defeat wealthy opponents.
Growing up in severe poverty, the MP recalls the daily struggles for basic necessities like food, education, and clothing. His parents worked as miners in the gold fields.
One fateful day, his father discovered a sizable gold nugget worth KSh 300,000. However, instead of supporting his family, his father disappeared to Mombasa and squandered the money.
Left with his struggling mother, the MP accompanied her to the mines where she earned a meager KSh 200 for laborious work.
Despite the hardship, she managed to put him through secondary school. Tragically, she lost her life when a section of the mining tunnels collapsed.
The MP remembers waking up at 5 am to work in the mines before rushing to school at 7 am.
“That is how I paid my fees, but in my third year, I dropped out. The fee balance was insurmountable,” he recounted.
