On 30, June 2023, San Pedro Huamela Mayor, Victor Hugo Sosa married his alligator in a colourful traditional ceremony as onlookers clapped and danced.

“. I accept responsibility because we love each other. you can’t have marriage without love”, Sosa said during the ritual.

The reptile is an alligator-like marsh dweller endermic to Mexico and Central America. The ritual marriage dates back centuries to prehispanic times among Oaxaca states Chontal and Huave Indigenous communities which came to peace around 230 years ago.

“We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures’, he said.

Tradition has it that friction was overcome when a choral king wedded a prince girl of the Huave Indigenous group represented by a female alligator.

Before the wedding, the reptile is taken house to house so that inhabitants can take her in their arms and dance. later she is put in a white bride’s costume and taken to a blessed event. The creature’s snout is bound shut to avoid any pre-marital mishaps.
