Speaking during a debate on the financial bill at the national parliament in Nairobi on 21-6-2023.Embakasi East members of parliament slammed the government for imposing 15 percent taxation on content creators.
He said that a lot of content creators work hard to earn from the content they create as somebody needs to have 3 million views to get 10000 shillings”. Content creators work hard for them to earn a living. Somebody must have a viewership of around 3 million for him to earn a 10000 shillings, is this fair? “, he said.

Babu Owino said the government had failed to employ young Kenyans as promised and now they want to tax the same youths. He said that is like punishing them for creating jobs for themselves.” You promised 1 million jobs within one year which you never delivered, the same content creators who are getting jobs on their own, are punished for creating jobs for themselves, “, he said.

Since the government imposed 15% taxation on digital creation, a lot of artists came into the limelight criticizing it.
Some celebs like Timothy Kimani alias Njugush, decried that the proposed law was unfair to digital creators because the majority of creators have in the past resorted to seeking financial support from the public, he also wondered how the tax proposal would be implemented since some content creators were only doing for fun while others had promoters who acted as a shield to creative works.
