The CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, Dr Ezekiel Mutua, recently criticized musicians for prioritizing likes and follows over moral values in their songs. He argued that instead of producing popular songs, one should create music with meaningful messages that can positively impact listeners.

Dr Mutua singled out Ssaru’s latest hit, “Kaskie Vibaya,” as an example of a song that promotes cultural and moral decay in society.

The song tells the story of a woman who leaves her boyfriend and becomes romantically involved with his father. The woman goes on about how the mubaba supports her financially.

Saru has responded to the criticism, arguing that her critics should listen to her other songs. She said that she cannot be pigeonholed to one age group and that her audience is diverse. She also said that she cannot stop creating songs just because one person didn’t like the lyrics or the song.

“If Ezekiel Mutua listened to my other songs, like my recent hit with a Rhumba taste, he would judge it differently,” she said. “He should check out my YouTube channel.”

Since its release, “Kaskie Vibaya” has become a hit, amassing more than 115,000 views on YouTube and sparking viral TikTok challenges.

The song carries a connotation that many people, particularly women, can relate to regarding the controversies surrounding sugar daddies and sugar babies.

It remains to be seen whether the criticism of “Kaskie Vibaya” will have any impact on Ssaru’s career. However, the song has certainly sparked a debate about the role of music in society and the responsibility of artists to create meaningful content.

In addition to the criticism from Dr Mutua, Ssaru has also been praised for her song. Some people have said that the song is empowering for women and that it challenges traditional gender roles.

Others have said that the song is simply a reflection of reality and that it does not promote any harmful messages.
